Maris began her sessions the summer before third grade and carried them through her first-semester meeting with her therapist twice per week. The first few weeks were incredibly eye-opening for me as a parent. I saw Maris come home excited as she relearned how to spell. Her therapist worked with her in ways that allowed Maris to retain, understand, and be able to spell the words correctly on her own. I hadn’t realized how much she was struggling until she began learning in a way that she was able to grasp and duplicate. The guilt set in with me but the gratitude prevailed.
From week to week Maris learned, practiced, and became efficient at new techniques that enabled her to become a proficient reader and strengthened her writing skills. Excuses and avoidance behavior began to dimmish and were replaced with an understanding of the tools she was given and a new avenue for success academically. Maris was able to recall and understand stories that she read or were read to her. This was something that lacked success prior to coming to Jodie.
While the academic growth is both measurable and incredible I am even more excited to see how Maris’s confidence grew in her reading. She craves reading time now and quickly reads through book after book. She doesn’t remember ever struggling to read and delightfully tells people that she has always loved reading. She asks to read to her little sister at night and often asks if she can read to me as well.”
