Is math hard for your kids? Do they struggle memorizing the facts? …with long division? …or with word problems? Well, consider this! Math may be hard, but life without math is harder! Maybe you think it doesn’t really matter if your kids are poor in math—-they will always have a calculator as long as they have access to a phone, right? Think again!
Even if they DO have calculators, these devices are worthless if students don’t have the number sense to analyze the logic! How often have you forgotten to clear your calculator, flipped the numbers, or forgotten a zero?!? Daily math is about solving problems. Good luck getting your calculator to help you with that!
Your personal word problems involve estimating times—how long will it take you to serve everybody breakfast, get ready for school and then make it to school on time? Don’t forget to include hidden time-eaters like traffic jams and spilled cereal!
Daily math involves making financial decisions. Think about the last time you shopped for the best deal on a phone—if the phone costs $1000.00, and the carrier is offering it for $75.00 a month for 36 months, that’s a lousy deal!
Your personal word problems pop up during meal preparation. You’re constantly using fractions when doubling and halving recipes. How much is 2/3 cup doubled? Or 2/3 cup halved?
Math is not so confusing when you understand the language of math. If 2 pears plus 3 pears = 5 pears, then 2 million plus 3 million = 5 million, and 2/8 plus 3/8 = 5/8. Get the idea?
Math is also consistent and predictable—it’s based on logic. If 7 + 7 = 14, then 7 + 8 = 15 (just one more), and if 7 + 8 = 15, then 15 – 8 = 7. It’s simple when you understand the logic.
Most kids in middle school and high school who are struggling with algebra or trig haven’t mastered the basics. They probably missed out on the language or the logic of math.
