Who are we?
We are an integrated group of professionals—speech-language pathologists, literacy specialists and orofacial myologists—who work as a team to help our clients achieve healthy, successful and satisfying lives. We believe success in life requires a balance. It begins with excellent physical health—good health begets success! Excellent health creates an environment where academic achievement, career satisfaction and social fulfillment can follow. To underscore that belief, we work as a team to diagnose our clients’ challenges and then treat them, if not simultaneously, in the most critical sequence. For some of our clients, we start by targeting their tongue positions and breathing patterns—this enables them to maintain strong body posture, fight off disease, sleep soundly, stabilize their dental alignment and live long, healthy lives. For other clients, we target their academic achievement and social fulfillment. We do this by helping our clients overcome their weaknesses, discover their islands of competence and uncover their unique gifts to share with the world. We work as a team to help our clients reach their personal best!
What makes us best
The Key is Our Connections Based Methodology Unlike most other speech/language practices or tutoring centers, we focus on the child as a whole being. We understand the connection between early speech and language skills and the social and academic skills that follow. We understand that difficulties with emergent skills at the toddler and preschool levels often resurface in elementary and middle school as problems in school and/or social situations. We realize that these difficulties are often “symptoms” which are present because a core speech/language component was overlooked or under-developed during earlier critical years. For example, did you know that…?
- Early problems with speech production often lead to difficulty with phonics acquisition and spelling in kindergarten and first grade. After all, speaking the sounds is the prerequisite for reading the sounds, which is the prerequisite for writing the sounds. It’s all about sounds!
- Early problems with play skills and language development often lead to difficulties on the playground and in group participation. For example, learning to share, to be a good loser and to negotiate during disagreements should emerge at the preschool age and remain key to successful team-work and conflict resolution throughout life.
- Early problems with language development often lead to problems with reading comprehension. To understand spoken language, we must read our conversation partners’ minds and make inferences; to understand books, we must read the minds of our story characters and make inferences.
These are just a few of the connections that link speech and language development to the acquisition of reading, writing and social skills. By targeting the underlying issue—the source speech/language deficit, the child is able to acquire the skill-set required for long-term academic or social success, not merely academic performance on a test or in a particular subject (as is often the case with tutoring alone). Along with this skill-set, the child also gains the self-confidence and the genuine feeling of effective self-actualization that are both so critical in all realms of life.
